10 Tips for Staying Fit and Healthy in the Workplace

Staying healthy at work is extremely important, not only does it affect your productivity but your mental health too! You know as an employee that there are many benefits for staying healthy, including reduced sick days and less stress. Some of these tips may seem obvious but it is the simple things that will prevent you from getting ill when you work in close quarters with others.

Keep your workspace clean

According to research the average desk has hundreds of bacteria we are unaware of. Tidying up at the end of the day can only take five minutes, keep sanitising wipes or spray at your desk and wipe down the surfaces often.

Wash your hands

This may seem very obvious but coughing and sneezing is the number one way you can get catch an illness. Always wash your hands before you eat and after using the bathroom, especially after sneezing or coughing.

Staying well-hydrated

Water keeps you alert and refreshed, it is crucial to your productivity and promotes clear thinking. Buy a large bottle than you can keep at your desk and refill throughout the day.

Eat well

Eating well during your work week is very important, light and healthy lunches will have long lasting energy with no afternoon slump. If you need a snack, pick some nuts or fruit to get you through the day. Eating well improves your overall general health.

Take breaks and get out in the sun

The sun may not always be possible in England but stepping outside during your lunch break has great benefits, the fresh air gives you a chance to clear your mind and calm yourself if you find your day is hectic. Your daily dose of vitamin D will be in there too!

Limit your caffeine intake

Almost everyone has a cup of tea and coffee throughout the day, but remember to drink these in moderation. You can also greatly reduce the calorie intake by having coffee without cream or sugar, which in turn has great health benefits.

Manage your stress

The nature of working life can be hectic at times, in order to be effective and work healthy you must learn to properly manage your stress levels. Take some time to find out what works for you, whether it be detaching from your emails on an evening to a relaxing spa day. Make sure you’re taking care of yourself to maintain a healthy work and life balance.

Know yourself

You are in charge of your own health and mental well-being. One of the most important things is being self-aware. You know your limits and do the best you can to stay within these limits given your job. You need to know when you should take a break to avoid being overcome with stress.

Getting plenty of exercise outside work

This may seem strange, but exercising outside of work time has great benefits mentally and physically. Exercise is a great stress release and it gives you time to reflect on your day. Even if it’s just a brisk evening walk a few times a week.

Stay positive

Mental health and attitude affects you in the work place more than you think. Having a positive attitude and trying to not let stress get the better of you will have a better work life.
