As Reece wasn’t suitable for any of the day centres available in Salford, we chose to come to Redbank House twice a week. He has also moved into independent living, so this provides a great opportunity for mum and son to spend quality time together. Reece loves chilling out in the soft playroom.

About the sensory rooms

Q: What is a sensory room?

A sensory room is a specially designed therapeutic space that stimulates the senses through light, sound, and touch. At Redbank House, the rooms feature fibre-optic strands, bubble tubes, disco balls, water beds, wall projections, and soft padded areas creating both calming and interactive atmospheres tailored to each visitor’s needs.

Q: How many sensory rooms does Redbank house have?

Redbank House has three sensory rooms. The newest, larger third room combines all the sensory equipment with soft play, making it especially suitable for children and their siblings. Each room has been designed by a professional Occupational Therapist team.

Q: What equipment is inside the sensory rooms?

Fibre-optic strands, bubble tubes, disco balls, water beds, wall projections, and soft padded areas create both calming and interactive atmospheres tailored to each visitor’s needs. Sound environments are fully adaptable — from classical music for relaxation to pop playlists for sensory-seeking users. Custom playlists are also welcome.

Q: Is there are ceiling hoist for users with limited mobility?

Yes. Sensory rooms 1 & 2 have a ceiling-mounted, trackable overhead hoist, allowing individuals with limited mobility to access and enjoy the space safely. Not all rooms have a hoist, so please contact Redbank House in advance to confirm availability for your session.

Who can visit?

Q: Who can use the sensory rooms?

The rooms are open to all ages – from babies to older adults. They are suitable for people with and without disabilities, including those with: learning disabilities, autism & ADHD, challenging behaviour, complex physical disabilities and sensory processing disorders.

Q: What are the benefits of using a sensory room?

Research and practice evidence suggest that regular use of a sensory room can improve focus and alertness, develop movement and concentration skills, reduce challenging behaviour over time, support creativity, and provide a calm, safe space for emotional regulation. For neurodivergent individuals, a controlled sensory environment helps with both sensory-seeking and sensory-avoidant needs.

Q: Are the rooms suitable for neurodivergent individuals such as autistic people or those with ADHD?

Yes. The rooms have been specifically designed by an Occupational Therapist team for autistic individuals, those with ADHD, and people with complex disabilities. Tactile elements help with desensitisation or sensory-seeking, while adaptable sound and light environments can be tuned to each person’s profile.
